Smoking Related Cancers

Lung Cancer

  • How common is lung cancer?
    • Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in Ireland.  Approximately 1500 people develop lung cancer each year.
  • What causes lung cancer?
    • Smoking causes 90% of lung cancer.
    • Non-smokers who breathe in other peoples tobacco smoke, known as second-hand smoke, have an increased risk of lung cancer.
    • Children and teenagers exposed to second hand smoke may be particularly at risk of lung cancer later in life as well as an increased risk of asthma and other respiratory problems.
    • In some very rare cases, exposure to certain chemicals and substances has been linked to lung cancer.

Mouth and Throat cancer

  • Smoking is a major cause of cancers of the oral cavity (tongue, lips, gums) oesophagus and larynx..

Cancer of the Stomach

  • When you inhale cigarette smoke, you will always swallow some of it without meaning to.  Consequently, the risk of developing stomach is higher among smokers.

Cancer of the Pancreas and Kidney

  • Smoking is at least a contributory and may be a causal factor in the development of cancer of the pancreas and of the kidney.

UTERINE CANCER
Smoking increases the risk of developing this type of cancer.

CANCER of the CERVIX
Women who smoke have a greater risk of developing cancer of the cervix.  If you have mild pre-cancerous changes in your cervical screen, the cells are more likely to go back to normal without any treatment if you stop smoking.

CANCER of the BLADDER
Smoking has been identified as a risk factor for cancer of the bladder.

CANCER of the COLON
Recent studies show that cigarette smoking can lead to colon cancer.

MYELOID LEUKEMIA
Smokers have an increased risk of developing myeloid leukaemia.
