Professor Dermot Kenny, Clinical Research Centre, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin

Professor Kenny graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1982 and then completed his medical training in Dublin teaching hospitals. He moved to the USA in 1987 and in 1997 became Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Medical College of Wisconsin and Associate Investigator at the Blood Research Institute. His research focused on how clotting caused heart attacks. This research was funded by the NIH and the American Heart Foundation. In 1998 he returned to Ireland as Director of the Clinical Research Centre of  the Royal College of Surgeons and Professor of Clinical Pharmacology. His interest in cancer research started when he returned to Ireland. It is known that the spread of cancer (metastases) is closely related to platelet function. His research developed a system that can observe clot formation in real time using a sophisticated imaging device that mimics blood flow in humans. This research is analysing how spreading cancer cells interact with platelets. Ultimately it is hoped to understand how cancer spreads, and how platelet function impacts this in order to identify new therapeutic targets.RCSI Research Page
