Elaine Kelly

It is with tremendous sadness that we wish to mark the loss of our friend Elaine Kelly who passed away on 15 May. We are particularly blessed in the Irish Cancer Society to have been allowed to spend the last six years working with Elaine and witnessing how she touched the lives of countless people like herself who were living with advanced cancer.

Elaine was always on hand to help the Society and anyone who needed her. Elaine had a hugely impressive understanding and knowledge of cancer research. She generously gave her time to the research team on numerous occasions, providing an important perspective into our research grant review processes. Elaine’s infectious sense of humour and genuine love of people are what we remember best about her. Elaine also had a special affinity with others who were living with cancer. We have all been inspired by the care and kindness Elaine showed to others through her selfless volunteer work.

Elaine was only 43 but she lived such a full life and travelled the world many times over. We looked forward to hearing about her travels and adventures and where she intended to go next.

We leave you with the profound words written by Elaine which truly capture her beautiful essence and spirit.

Who do we aspire to be?
by Elaine Kelly

Who do we aspire to be?
What impression did you leave yesterday?
What will you leave today,
and what impression will you leave tomorrow?
Aspire to be yourself,
and in doing so recognise and utilise
the beautiful gifts that God gave you.
Aspire to be yourself,
so that you can inspire others.
