Upcoming BREAST-PREDICT events
As part of their continued outreach work, BREAST-PREDICT will hold a number of events for the public and cancer research community in the coming weeks.
‘The Intersection between Exercise, Diet and Genetics in Cancer’ - one-day symposium, Thursday 26 April
A one-day science-oriented symposium examining the links between exercise, diet and genetics and cancer will take place in the UCD Conway Institute on Thursday, 26 April. Invited keynote speaker is Dr Pamela Goodwin, Director of Mount Sinai Hospital's Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre in Toronto, Canada.
Dr Goodwin is an esteemed medical oncologist with extensive experience in the area of breast cancer, with a focus on lifestyle and genetic factors in the development and clinical course of cancer (please find the link to her profile here).
A science-oriented session will be held in the UCD Conway Institute during the day, which will include additional short talks (20min plus 10min Q&A) from a series of national investigators covering various topics under the general theme of the event. This event will be quite science-driven, but will be open also to whomever is interested in attending. More details to follow – check breastpredict.com for more information.
'Taking Charge of Breast Cancer: Lifestyle Tips for Survivors' - Free Public Talk, Thursday 26 April
Later in the evening (6pm start), BREAST-PREDICT is planning a free public, patient-oriented session in the J.M. Synge Lecture Theatre (Trinity College Dublin Arts Building, second floor Room 2039). Registration is required.

Here, Dr Goodwin will cover aspects of her work with cancer patient support groups. She is the creator of the "Taking Charge"™ support group program at the Marvelle Koffler Breast Cancer Centre, which educates patients about healthier diet and physical activity choices that may decrease risk of recurrence. This event will take place in conjunction with Europa Donna Ireland. More details to follow.
'Perceptions in Breast Cancer' - Prof Dame Lesley Fallowfield evening seminar, Tuesday 1 May
Our invited speaker is a distinguished Professor of Psycho Oncology at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School in the UK. Prof Fallowfield's research interests include the assessment of Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) in clinical trials of cancer therapy, and communication-development and evaluation of innovative training courses and materials to assist healthcare professionals' communicating with patients, their families and with clinical colleagues. This free seminar will be held in the Albert Theatre in RCSI, from 5pm. Registration is required.
Prof Cathy Kelly (Consultant Medical Oncologist, Mater Hospital) will also be talking about her work in relation to patients' perspectives of cancer clinical trials.
Both talks will be general in nature and we hope would gain an audience from both scientists, clinicians, patients, patient advocates and other stakeholders.
