How long until Diagnosis?

Last reply: 13 December 2022 10:40

Hi, my consultant told me recently that my ultrasound showed a mass on my liver. He didn’t say if he thought it was cancer specifically but I have cirrhosis so I’m at risk, I’m waiting for an urgent MRI since 9th of November. How long typically is the wait for MRIs or how long does diagnosis usually take? Thanks

Hi Liverlady,

Thank you for posting.  I’m sorry to read that you are having tests, it is very common to feel worried at a time like this.  There is information available in our website about different tests.

Wait times for tests and procedures vary from hospital to hospital and also depending on the urgency.  We would recommend to get in touch with your consultant to discuss the wait time and to follow up with the radiology department.  When diagnosing cancer, generally no one test is definitive.  Different tests and procedures such as scans and biopsies are required to make a diagnosis and plan treatment.  Taking this into account, it can be some weeks before a diagnosis is made.

I do hope this information is helpful, please contact us on 1800 200 700 if you would like to speak with a cancer nurse about your situation or for any further advice or support.

Best wishes,

Cancer nurse
