Shampoo during chemo

Last reply: 21 April 2022 16:26

Hello,
I had my first chemo last week, 2nd tomorrow.
I have cut my hair really short. I was just wondering what kind of shampoo is recommended? I have read baby shampoo, but also heard it is too alkaline and a pH neutral one is better. Also, after hair loss, do you still shampoo your head?
Any advice is greatly appreciated

Dear Libra1975

Thank you for posting on our ‘Ask the Nurse’ section of our online community.

We wish you the very best with your chemotherapy. It is advisable to use mild shampoo or unscented gentle shampoo- often the pharmacist can point these out to you. No it is not necessary to use shampoo after your hair has fallen out. You might find your scalp is too dry for even soap so a gentle unperfumed moisturiser on your scalp can help. Natural oils such as almond oil or olive oil are suitable. Your scalp with be extra sensitive to the sun so you will need to cover it and use sunscreen.

It would be lovely to talk to you on our support line about this plus wigs/bandana’s etc and the various ‘tips’ and supports such as the  Look Good Feel Good programme. We also have cancer nurses in our Daffodil Centres there to support you through this.  Our number is 1800 200 700 and we are here Mon- Fri 9-5pm

Kind regards
