Surgery and radiotherapy following chemo
Hi
I'm coming to the end of my chemo for Her2+ breast cancer 🙌. Will be having surgery and radiotherapy afterwards and just wondering what is the usual timescale ie how long after chemo will surgery be and then how long to radiotherapy?
Thank you!
Hi H0mepage,
Thank you for posting in our Ask a Nurse section.
I am sorry to hear you have had a diagnosis of breast cancer and are undergoing chemo but congratulations on coming to the end of it. I hope you are tolerating it well and doing ok.
The timescale to surgery after chemo is around 6 weeks (and no longer than 8 weeks), however this may depend on your recovery post chemotherapy and ensuring you are fit and well for surgery. The timescale to radiotherapy is around 4 to 6 weeks but again may depend on your recovery after surgery. It may be worth speaking with your oncology consultant to establish some more definitive timelines.
If you would like any further information or support or to speak with a cancer nurse you can call our Support Line on 1800 200 700 Mon to Fri 9am to 5pm.

Hi there.
I had this exact treatment last year. I finished chemo 21 may, surgery 23 june and radiotherapy 10 July.
All happens pretty quickly
Best of luck!
Sorry- 10 aug for radiotherapy
Hi H0mepage
Surgery usually happens five or six weeks after the end of chemo to give a body a chance to heal from the effects of chemo and then radiotherapy usually follows four or five weeks after surgery.
Best of luck with your surgery and radiotherapy.
Best wishes
