BRCA Testing Costs

Last reply: 29 May 2014 23:12

Hi Everyone
I am new to this board but I have been a faithful reader since June 2013 when I was diagnosed Image removed. ! I can honestly say that reading all your posts really helped me to focus on the task of getting through all the various treatments! I am on a waiting list for BRCA testing (currently takes a year!!) and I was wondering did anyone go privately and if they did how much did it cost!!!!
Thanks for any info you can give! Image removed.

It cost me 1400 Eur. I was entitled to free test on account of type of cancer I have but the wait was far too long.
The only help you'll get is 20% back on med1.
The public wait is ridiculous and unnecessary. All that was involved was a 10 minute chat with genetic councillor (who was actually a nurse, not a doctor) and a little form filling. The blood test was done in phlebotomy within 1 hour of deciding to pay for test. Both public and private blood samples are sent to same lab in uk for testing
So little resources necessary. It angers me that they force public to patients to wait for no reason. I wonder are they hoping some will forget about (or die!) meantime, so they can save a bit of money.

Hi Ladies,

I had the brca test done a few years ago as a public patient. Now I had to push to be tested - did not have sufficient family history according to Brest Surgeon but I explained that there was enough history for me to want to know AND that it would inform my reconstruction surgery as I would want to get other boob off.

Docs indicated the wait for the test would be long but I actually got a letter within 3 months for an apointment three months later so the wait was about 6 months. I got results within three months (negative TG), even though I was told it may take six months.

Get yourself in the public system and see what the wait is like for a consult with the genetics team in Crumlin. If the wait is too long, they you might want to consider private.

Good luck
