Occult cancer

Last reply: 01 March 2013 08:54

Hi there, was told today that my cancer is 'occult'. That it couldn't be seen on my mammograms but showed up on the ultrasound. Tumours can also be easily felt through the skin.
Seemingly it happens in 10-15% of cancer cases. Anyone else get this diagnosis?

Yes mine is occult. I had a 10 cm Tumor which did not show up on Mamo or Ultrasound. It presents as strands and not a cluster so can't be seen or felt.

Hi all
I wasn't told occult but what happened was the main tumour was seen on mammogram and then a second one showed up on ultrasound only. Then another ultrasound found a third tiny tumour. The Mri didn't find the second or third tumours at all! And finally, the pathology tests showed DCIS all over the place that no test had showed up!
I found it all a bit worrying but they reassured me that that is the reason they do all the different tests. I suppose it is reassuring that they do so many tests that it all comes together in the end.

Never heard the word "occult" but mine didn't show on mammo only ultrasound. It was 8.5cm when removed after "responding well" to 6 rounds of horrendous chemo, I didn't ask what size before chemo, some pieces of info are best off not being know. I believe this happens in the case of Inflammatory BC wasn't aware that it happened with other types. Tis gone now Thank god. Image removed.
