reconstruction advice

Sorry I can‘t help with your question but you have every right to be scared. You Are so young to have had cancer and you have huge decisions to make. But once you get a cancer diagnosis you will do anything to stop it returning.So wishing you all the best

Thank you elizio. The breast care nurse said she would put me in contact with someone of similar age and who had the op. I am so overwhelmed with the decision but as you said one will do anything to remove the risk.

I am in a similar postion to you I have had my chemo and radiotherapy finished in April 2013 BRCA2 positive .
I am looking at preventive mastectomy with reconstruction .
I am of slim build so my only option is the LD recon, thats the one your talking about where they take the muscle from the back and wrap it around to fill your breast . I can have an implant in one side but I am wondering is it worth it as then they will be different as I age and I dont know how long implants last .Anyhow I asked to speak to someone who has gone through this recon so hopefully I will have more info next week that I can share with you
I believe the result of this surgery is very good (all going well!!)

Hi Ann,

I had the Diep reconstruction on one side in December and I'm very happy with my decision. It does not involve any muscle, I don't know if this option is open to you. I spoke to several people beforehand who had different types of reconstruction which I found very helpful. I wish you the best of luck with your decision. It is not easy weighing up the different options!

I too am slim build but did not want an implant of any sort. I do not have enough tummy for the DIEP recon, but talked it through with the plastic surgeon and he is going to do a TUG recon (Using my inner thighs) I will end up smaller than I was, but at least the two will match

I have a date for 25th of this month, so will let you know hoe I get on.

Thanks ladies for your posts. It's always helpful to hear other peoples stories. I think the ld flap and the tug are the ones the surgeon mentioned. More so LD not sure why that's my best option though. She said they don't normally do the recon using stomach muscle on women who haven't had kids so that's out for me. I'm not too sure like NAS27 about the implant. Not sure how it would look as I age. I'd really prefer no implant personally if it's possible. I'd be more than happy for a small bust if that was the consequence of no implant. Im still reading up on it and going to ring the nurse in the next week or so to talk to someone. Best of luck youngk with your upcoming surgery.
