secondary breast cancer
i had a mastectomy on the 7th of november this year and two weeks after the operation i was told that i have secondary cancer in femur and pelvis. this is very frightening and i am also on zometa and having radiotherapy this week i am 49 years of age and i would just like to know if there is any one out there living with this at the moment and what can i expect in the way of quality of life with regard to pain control and life expectancy
i would love to hear from any one with any advice
kasandra,
I'm Sorry to hear about your current diagnosis. I'm in a similar boat and the good news is I'v been in this boat for six years and still paddling away with good quality of life when I pace myself.
I have secondaries in my lung since 2002. Secondaries are viewed more like a chronic illness now and the aim is to control the disease. Get plenty of rest I found that my brain needed as much rest as my body.
I wish you well, take care.

hi polly and happy
Thank you for replying I am glad to hear that you both know of people in the same posoition as myself. I am trying to come to terms with it at the moment and I am starting chemo on the 2nd of jan for four months. I have already had five sessions of radiation to releive pain and it seems to be working. I just hope i so not have and further secondaries i wonder is it common for it to up again some where else and if so how soon.
any way not to dwell on the negative i intend to keep going as best i can with the help of my family and friends
thanks again
kasandra

Hi, There,
Iam now on my last treatment of chemo tomorrow, cant believe i have come so far, will continue on zometa and am going on hormone tretment, so hoping this will keep things at bay for a long time. I am now getting on with my life, and am keeping positive, hoping that it does not turn up in any organs..

Hi Kasandra,
Though not in the same boat as you, just wanted to say how sorry I am to to hear of your secondary spread, and so soon after your primary diagnosis. How unfair it all is.
I have heard that a secondary spread to the bones can be quite manageable, some even regard it as more a chronic condition. I believe you can live many years with a good quality of life. I know of women who living with it for many years.
This must all be such a shock to you. Hope you are doing ok.
