Shave hair off as it falls out or not

Last reply: 17 May 2012 10:15

Hi all

Had my first chemo (Taxotere) on 24th April and head/scalp burning ever since. This morning lots of hair on my pillow and more came off in the shower. Question is how long before it all comes out. Only looks a bit thin in places and should I just shave it all off. Is it less traumatic. What do you think?

Hi Dane7

I remember very clearly where you are!!!!I had my first taxotere on 16th dec gone and yes the tingling and soreness began fairly quickly.I lasted till 2 days before second treatment(1 every 3 weeks) i shaved mine off.It felt good to have controll over some part, even though i knew it was going to go i felt i decided when.

I hope treatment is not too harsh on you and you get through it well.

Highly recommend shaving it off. I got mine cut really short about a week after starting treatment. It was less than an inch long but honestly it was too long once it started coming out. The process of shedding lasted the best part of a week. It used to take me 5 min to have a shower and another 10 min to clean up afterwards. Honestly it was a pain. If you can face it, suggest you shave it off completely. Once it is gone you will be surprised how OK you will be, the dread of hair loss is worse than the loss, honest.

Good luck with it, it will grow again in now time.

I too had my head shaved - two weeks to the day after my first chemotherapy treatment of cyclophosphamide and Doxorubicin my hair started to come out and of course it became my new party trick, grabbing a fist of hair and giving it a small tug to see how bad the hair loss really was! Purely to save me a fortune in paying a plumber if my shower got blocked up, I let my children loose with a scissors and my husband loose with an electric hair shaver. I wasn't prepared for how cold my head would feel though! So just make sure if you are shaving your hair, to have headscarves ready.

I hope all goes well, mind yourself x

I started chemo in Dec 2011 and was hoping to get Christmas with my own hair. Unfortunately not to be Image removed. Went to hairdresser where I got sorted for a wig and it was all shaved off. I found that worse than starting chemo. Advice I was given is that u are taking control and not letting it control u so that is why i decided to shave it all off. Mine started growing back after 4th chemo. I finished chemo on 22 March and now hair is slowly filling in. Probably be a while before I have the courage to go around without the wig or a hat but am now finding the wig is really annoying.
Advice about wearing hat is good - I was really surprised at how cold I felt afterwards. Good luck and hope all goes well for you. Sending you hugs xoxo

Hi,

I donated my hair to the rapunzel foundation as it was very long and got it cut short before I had the double mastectomy. When it was time for chemo I had it shaved off. Here are the photos. Like everyone has said It's about control, I got it shaved off before it fell out........

Blessings

Thanks all for the wise advice. I bit the bullet and got it shaved off today. The relief from the scalp and head pain was immense. Thanks for the good advice. 2 chemos down and 4 to go.
