Dad diagnosed

Last reply: 12 September 2024 17:33

My dad has been kept in the cuh following his scan today, and starts radiotherapy on his brain first thing tomorrow for 2 weeks? He has been diagnosed with lung cancer and it’s gone to the brain. I’m in the uk and finding it very hard to speak to anyone on the phone. Can anyone explain why only 2 weeks?

Dear kellie.

Thank you for posting on our online community. I am very sorry to read about your father’s diagnosis. This must be a very difficult time for you as a family, particularly as you are abroad.

Radiotherapy can be used to control and relieve symptoms that arise because of cancer spreading to another part of the body. The dosage and length of treatment can vary between patients, even between those with the same type of tumor. However, people generally require between 1 and 10 (2 weeks) treatments of radiotherapy to relieve the symptoms they experience because of brain metastases. I have attached a link with more information about radiotherapy here.

Kellie, if you would like to speak to one of the nurses, please call our support line. The support line can be reached by dialing +35312310500 and asking to be transferred to the support line. I do hope that we hear from you and that your father’s treatment goes well.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse

Many thanks for the reply, he had his 2 weeks radiation, now waiting to see what treatment will be going forward regarding the lung. Still finding it very difficult to speak with the actual consultant.
