Breast Cancer Oncologist

Last reply: 06 February 2017 11:34

Hi,

My wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently in hospital for her second surgery.

Though she has a medical oncologist consultant, my concern is if the consultant is a specialist in breast cancer or a general oncologist. Though I can ask the consultant, I tried to do some research on oncologist specialities and failed to find a list. I could find lists of oncologists in Ireland but not those who's sole or main focus is on breast cancer.

We all want the best for ourselves and our loved ones and I'm lucky enough to have health insurance for her that will cover any consultant in any hospital in Ireland (And maybe elsewhere but hopefully it will not come to that).

My world has turned upside down, and I'm finding it very frustrating that I can't even find such basic information as:
a) Who in Ireland is a Specialist Breast Oncologist?
b) Who is considered the best?

I hope you can help me find the information that I hope is easy to find and its just my panic that is stopping me finding it.

CH

Dear CH, I am sorry to hear of your wife’s diagnosis and that she is now in hospital having surgery. I suggest that you do ask your wife’s doctor or breast care nurse if the oncologist has a special interest in breast cancer. We don’t have a specific list of oncologist with a special interest in breast cancer. It is important that you have every confidence in your wife’s consultant and if you have a concern it is reasonable to discuss this with her oncologist. If you are not satisfied you are entitled to seek a second opinion from another oncologist. Alternatively you could discuss this with your GP. He/she will have access to the Irish Medical Directory which lists the oncologists and their ‘special interest’. To speak to a nurse contact our Cancer Nurseline Mon-Fr 10-4pm at 1800 200 Kind regards

I went to Beaumont to see the so called best. Some years later following complications of surgery I moved to the mater. The issue isn't really public or private as I genuinely had no worse treatment than my private counterparts...in some cases it was even better!!! The main advice would be to stay on top of everything. Stay informed and if a doc gets pissed off if you ask too many questions...don't be intimidated......stay strong and be your wifes best advocate. Best of luck with all.

Hi....I'm attending St. Vincent's Hosp for Breast Cancer and my Oncologist is a Medical Oncologist with a special interest and training in Breast Cancer. I have found her brilliant...She explains everything to you at a rate that you want and can digest...no question is too insignificant and she will give you as much time as needed...I fully trust her and anyone I spoke to under her when I was having my chemo echoed my feelings about her knowledge and expertise. She is on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Marie Keating Foundation ..Not sure if I'm allowed mention her name here??..If I can I will!! good luck with your journey
