contraception
Hi folks, looking for a bit of advice.Just met the oncologist who will be dealing with me the other day, I have a mirena coil in situ she recommends removing same as my cancer is hormone driven and the mirena secretes small amt of hormones I believe.Cant use any type of pill so my options are tubal ligation, condoms or vasectomy for my hubby.Has anyone come up against anything like this .I have 2 fabulous healthy children and know my family is complete.
Hi Bernie,
Thanks for reply, I mentioned the copper coil to her too but she wasn't in agreement with that either she feels it too has some hormone involvement.Apparently she said all her male colleagues don't advise patients to remove coil but all the female oncologists do recommend it.I am not sure yet what to do , there isn't any research to back up removal of it but if we r on medication to supress hormones why would we use something that will produce oestrogen her words.I guess I will have to do a bit more research in to it ,all still very new to me.Thanks again Bernie and hope you r doing well.
Hello Happymum!
For what it's worth I had a copper coil fitted (many moons ago now ) and it just wouldn't settle at all. I was like you and knew that our family was complete so I went ahead and had tubal ligation and I have never looked back, plus the bonus of no pregnancy worries!

Hi Resolute,
Thanks for reply, I just remembered why specifically the copper coil wont work ,it's because of intermittent bleeding and when on tamoxifen and kind of bleeding has to be investigated so that will definitely be hassle. So much to remember isn't there , this cancer business is a real education.Great to hear it worked for you, at the moment I am looking in to where procedure can b carried out and cost.I don't think health insurance companies cover the cost.Keep well.x
Hi Happymum,
I had the copper coil in for a good while with no probs and I'm on tamoxifen as well but I see why your hesitant. We become such experts on everything on this journey. I wonder does anyone want to pay us all to be on one of those boards where they pay themselves plenty
I came back positive for brca2 so had ovaries removed for preventive reasons then.
Good luck with your decisions
Bernie xx
Hi Happymum,
I had the copper coil fitted instead this was recommended as no hormone in it. I got it as a prescription from chemist and GP fitted it. I think it works the same otherwise as the mirena coil and lasts about the same but safer for us.
Hope this helps good luck with it,
Bernie
