Help Ingidgestion nearly unbearable

Last reply: 06 November 2012 17:52

Hi Guys

Wondering if any tips on how to beat indigestion. I literally feel someone is squeezing around my heart indigestion is so bad can hardly breathe. Had it the other night as well it got so bad actually got sick twice - its like acid reflux or something and the next door neighbours can hear me burping.

I got some anti-acids from chemist which dont seem to have done any good. Is this normal when going through Chemo? I have had heartburn and indigestion before but this is really painful.

Trying to eat tiny amounts as often as possible. Any hints appreciated. People keep saying eat this eat that - but need to get a list together of what fruit and veg really arent acidy.

thanks!

Hi dee
I didn't really have this but have been taking Zoton everyday. It was prescribed right at the beginning before I got started so maybe that's why I didn't have indigestion. If I have any days with a touch of indigestion, I take extra!
I hope this helps. I know how awful it is cos I've had an ulcer in the past.

Hi Deefed,
Welcome to the world of chemo Image removed. You poor thing, I had very bad indigestion/burning a couple of days after my first session of chemo. The doctor in my onco ward perscribed "Losamel" gastro-resistant tablets for me. I'm coming to the end of my chemo now and I'm still taking one of these a day for approximately 2 weeks after each session.
I hope this little bit of info helps,

Take care,
Shirls

You poor thing.

I found peppermint tea worked for me but my symptoms don't sound as bad as yours. I had a couple of "very burpy" days after each round of chemo and the peppermint tea did help. Even if it doesn't work I don't think it'll do you any harm. Also, you can get peppermint capsules in the chemist if you can't face the tea - it can be an acquired taste.

Hi Dee

I had a dreadful time too. Pineapple helped sometimes nibbling on other fresh fruit too. Tell the nurses they will give you better and stronger tablets for it. I ended up getting a stronger type nearly every time! But here I am a year later forgetting all about it until I read your post!
Seriously there are drugs for most of the side effects last year I felt like a walking chemist now I am back to not taking anything and I feel good.

Take care

Hi Dee
I had one particular week that I was eating rings around me and it was one of the nurses who said that my heartburn was doing it to me... And I thought it was me just being a savage!

If I were you I would get onto your team and get something to help you - you shouldn't have to put up with it especially when there is something out there to help you.

Hope it all goes away soon xx

Hi Dee,

So glad to see that you are feeling much better this weekend Image removed. .

I am not sure if this is true for everyone but my very first chemo session was by far the worst. Afterwards the symptoms were not as strong and I was not so totally out of it.

And there was definitely a pattern. A rough first week and then gradually getting better ... until it was time for the next dose. And as the weeks went by a growing fatigue that didn't start to lessen until after chemo was finished.

You may need some prescription medication for the side effects. I agree, just take everything you need to make your life easier right now - but OK all of your medication with your doctors first.

A friend gave me this good advice when I was starting chemo. Eating bland and soft, well cooked food for 2 to 3 days after the chemo helps. Nothing acidic. No alcohol and loads of water to help the liver and kidneys which are already working overtime to cope with the chemo. Don't be tempted to eat your favourite foods just in case you are sick and get turned off them forever. Image removed.

I had tablets for indigestion and gastric reflux but I cannot remember what they were called. I also had a stock of rice biscuits to nibble when the indigestion was bad (light and low calories Image removed. ). And you won't believe this. When I first saw your post I thought poor Dee, at least I didn't have indigestion. Then I remembered that I did and that it was pretty awful at one point. So you see in a few months some of the miseries you are going through now will be forgotten. You'll be trying to figure out how to grow out your hair without going through a phase of having a Margaret Thatcher hair-do Image removed.

All the best

Kathleen

Hi Kathleen

Isnt it strange the way you forget! (Thats a good thing).

Feeling much better now, no problem with acid due next bout in a week so hopefully body getting hyped up again for next nuking.

Will take all your tips into consideration below for the first week after next chemo - hopefully it will be better than the last one and will defo ask more about meds. The anti-sickness they told me to take if I needed them the first two days I didnt so held off - prob should have taken them either way!

Thanks again!!

Hi Dee
Good to hear you are ok; I think I was a bit like you in so as I was better prepared for the 2nd treatment and definitely take everything you can. It's easier stay ahead of the sickness than having to deal with it. I found myself way more tired by the time I got to #4 of my treatment but was still in pretty good form, I think!! Chemotherapy brain kicked in badly though and my consentration was appalling! But then again my husband reckons I was always like that Image removed.
I also found ice-cold drinks and ice-pops were life savers for me when feeling gawky so I kept a box of ice-lollies in my freezer.
Best of luck x

Hey Dee,
I too had really bad indigestion and trapped wind ! My stomach was very uncomfortable. This used to happen more when I used to come off the meds. I just started acupuncture last week and it has gone now but it is also at the end of my (3 week AC) cycle so would have expected improvement anyway. I had another session this morn so I will see how I get on when I start my Taxol tomorrow !

Hope your next session goes well

take care
