Holiday between chemo and mastectomy????

Last reply: 27 June 2014 22:44

Hi all just wondered if anybody has had a holiday in the window between chemo and surgery. My onc and breast care nurse said yes no problem. Just wondering am I biting off more than I can chew.

We had a holiday booked for the end of June to Canada , as my 22 year old son ( who we miss dearly) moved there in December. Aer Lingus do not give refunds, so we stand to lose €2k in flights that wasn't easy come by. But can rebook up until November, which was when we booked initially. This will cost around €600 for my husband myself and 15 year old son.

I finish weekly taxol at the end of August ( all going to plan). Will I be up to it? I don't intend to be doing a lot of site seeing or walking around too much we will be staying central, so everybody else can do this. And I'm quite happy to stay in and read etc. and go out for dinner etc. I will have a break of about 4 weeks from taxol. Sorry it's so long winded but would love to hear anybody else's experiences before committing to this. Don't want to be throwing more money away if possible.

Thank you in advance
Ann

I'd say go for it , especially if the nurses said yes. Don't have experience of it as I had lumpectomy but once I was three weeks finished my chemo I felt better again and would have had no problem going but I was brought in pretty quickly after chemo, about three weeks. I did go to lanzarote between op and rads though and really enjoyed it and like you said, didn't do too much just read and relaxed. It would be great for you to have it to look forward to. Best of luck in everything x

Hi Anng
I second what wicklowlady has said and say go for it. I had mastectomy first followed by chemo, but the operation itself isn't that bad. You will be tired when the chemo is done but I think the holiday gives you a goal and something to look forward to after the chemo. I finished chemo 3 weeks ago and am definitely tired but life is going on pretty much as normal albeit with maybe earlier nights, but I have probably always stayed up too late anyway. Best of luck with the treatment.

Thanks ladies,

It's great to hear what other people think who have been through it.
I think I will go for definite, looking forward to seeing my son and it gives me something to aim for.

Thanks again hoping you are all well. It can be very isolating sometimes and lovely to hear from other people who either are or have been in the same position. Sending you all good wishes.

I also say go for it! I finished taxol 10 days ago and I'm heading to Spain for a week tomorrow! I'm really looking forward to it, I'd say I'm completely back to normal at the moment and no lingering tiredness from chemo. You should definitely be able for it. Enjoy!

Hi newtothis

I'm delighted you had a great holiday. I have booked for September now decided to go ahead with it and really looking forward to it now. I suppose still a little apprehensive but taxol so far has been very tolerable. Feel like I can actually look ahead now. You'll have to plan your next holiday now!!!!! Good luck and thanks again.
