Morphine...It does not like me!

Last reply: 02 September 2011 22:14

Had 3rd surgery on Wednesday and morphine again caused the BP and heart rate to drop. Made me feel very, very groggy and I was so sick on the way home...had to pull into the side of the road (apologies for being graphic)!!!!!!

I am going to tell them to put it in BOLD on my chart not to give me morphine again should I have further surgery.

Just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience and what other form of pain relief did you use and was it effective?

Energy levels are a bit down today but I forget I have had 3 anaesthetics in 3 months...my poor body has been through alot. Ah well, just have to be extra nice to myself so Image removed.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Micheline ,you are fantastic.I have only been diagnosed with breast cancer ,last Friday, all my tests are clear, bloods, under arm lymph nodes, bone, liver, all clear.my lump is 2.5cm.I have a day procedure removing another lymph node under my arm,so they can be sure etc.then hoping to start my treatment. They put a clip on the tumour...I'm married 13 years and have three kids.ages11,10,8...I'm very scared,I'm 34.I will have chemotherapy once every three weeks for I think four months and herceptin...then they remove tumour followed by radiation for two weeks a few weeks after op...Any advice on staying calm or diet etc...I'm very worried about side effects.....Sorry I can't advice you on your treatment, but you are doing fantastic, best of luck,Olivia x

Snap wexlass, morphine does not like me either but it took till surgery no 3 for me to figure it out.

The first time I only had a small dose after lumpectomy and my tummy felt awful for a day after. I put it down to stress and nerves. Second time was a month later after mastectomy. I vomited in the evening after surgery, they had to give me an injection to stop me feeling so ill. I had not realised tho that it was the morphine.

Roll on 16 or so months and my recon surgery. I was in quite a bit of pain so was self medicating the morphine on the drip. I felt really awful the day after the surgery. I was moved from drip based to tablet based morphine. Tummy was really off so while I was feeling physically better and starting to move about, I felt my insides were being burnt. Again I did not realise it was the morphine. I did something completely
embarrassing while on a little walk about in Beaumont hospital. My hubby had visited with our two little ones and I met them in the foyer. 10 min into the visit I had to say goodbye as I felt so awful. Walking back to my room, I knew I was going to vomit. The only vessel in sight was a bin so that is what I had to use. Thankfully no one was around tho as it was in the lift lobby I am sure it was picked up on CCTV! I had to confess to the nurses when I returned. They called a doc. I told him I thought it was the drugs I was on. He switched me to non morphine based ones and within 24 hours I felt much better. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name.

Hopefully you won't have need for more surgery but if you do, ask about non morphine based options.

Thanks LindyLu, its amazing how it takes a while before we figure out what's causing the problem! At least now we know.

I will definitely be asking them about non-morphine based pain relief, should I need it.

Be well. Be Amazing!
