Mouthwash?? Mouthwash with cloves extract v. Corsodyl

Last reply: 19 January 2013 11:37

Hi all,

I know one of you very, very kindly gave a tip to those of us starting chemo on the importance of not using Corsodyl as it blackens teeth and one of you mentioned a mouthwash that you got in a health store which was better and it had cloves in it and other good ingredients too.

I have searched through all the posts and I can't seem to find the details, I know my brain isn't very good at the moment anyway.

In fact, the oncology nurse was surprised yesterday that I was prescribed Corsodyl, as not alone does it stain the teeth, it can also irritate the lining of the mouth and obviously this is something we want to avoid when having chemo.

Also just wondered if any of you found KIN mouthwash good. I lost my aunt to cancer in September and when she was undergoing chemo, she found this good also.

Thanks a million,
Mxx

Hi there,

Very sorry to hear about your Aunt must have being very difficult for you all .

I don't know about the cloves but I've just being using salt and water or else Oral B non alcohol mouthwash . I find the salt and water really good ...

Corsodyl is very harsh ...so am surprised at that ..unless there is a special one .

Hope this helps

take care

Thanks NAS27,

Yes, nurse did recommend salt and water as well yesterday, at least we know the ingredients are pure and there aren't lots of other unknown ingredients in it!

Yes it is hard on my family in general, me getting this diagnosis so soon after losing a very wonderful and beautiful aunt, we all loved her so dearly. She had lung cancer and never smoked in her life and led a very quiet and gentle life, looking after our granny. It is hard on my mother really, losing a very dear sister and then I felt so bad having to tell her my news, but breast cancer these days has a much better prognosis too, so that is what we are focused on.

Hope the neuropathy eases for you, it sounds very unpleasant indeed.

Much love,
Mxx

Dear M,

I really feel for you ...very difficult to deal with the loss of someone you love and then be in the situation yourself of having to go through breast cancer .
Your right though the prognosis is good and you need all the support you can get .... .

I was doing pretty good until a couple of weeks ago so its just a bit of bad luck !onward and upwards.

I don't know if you've being to the ARC centre at all great for support and complementary alternative therapies .They also do relaxation and meditation ...fantastic place ...I did acupunture a few weeks ago ..helped alot with some of my side effects ...need some more!

sending you lots of good vibes

Hi, I used listerine non alcoholic and had no problems with mouth sores. The hospital (Vincent's public) actually gave me some mouthwash /or maybe prescribed me something that was gentle and also non alcoholic. They prescribed micostatin as well. Good luck x

Thanks Ania,

Yes I have the mycostatin, but also want to use the mouthwash, feel I will be giving everything a good rinse.

Must admit I didn't even think of Listerine non-alcoholic. Will start with salt and water anyway, but would also like the convenience of something that you can unscrew from a bottle.

Thanks,
Mxx

I used the mouthwash that the hospital gave me bioXtra and with the mycostatin I never got a blister but I must admit I have been a bit lax of late and not doing it all the time you just get fed up doing it and I know if I get a blister it'll be my own fault but you do get browned off with it all.

Hi there,
I used Kin mouthwash and mycostin and never had any problems thank God during my 6 chemos. I can't say I used them as often as I was supposed to, was very good at the start but then I slipped a bit but I got away with it Image removed.

Hi

I couldn't stomach any mouthwash so the nurse said to get a 500ml bottle of water and put 2 teaspoons of salt in that and keep that as my bottle of mouthwash. I had started to get blisters before I did that but once I started using the salty water I was fine.

Good luck x

Ya I was admitted to hospital during my chemo and they gave me a bottle of salt water every morning. I didn't have the luxury of mouthwash while in the hospital !!

Thank you all for your replies, salt & water does seem to be a good option, also got KIN mouthwash and toothpaste, and with mycostatin, should have all eventualities covered.

Thanks,
M xx

Hello there

Kin worked for me and the hospital prescribed a Magic Mouthwash which I gargled with then swallowed. The chemist made it up for me. It was really good as I got a few ulcers on the tongue. Good luck

Hi all
I made up a big glass bottle of salty water and left it by the sink with an upturned glass on top of it and I gargled it anytime I thought of it. I got some mouth ulcers but by upping the gargling they went away quite soon.
I was supposed to do the mycostatin 4 times a day but once I realised that was the cause of the horrible taste in my mouth I gave up on it. Didn't have any problems with thrush.
Good luck with it all.
