Nipple reconstruction

Last reply: 11 January 2017 11:38

Hi there, I've had dcis and Paget's disease of breast had my nipple removed and 3 cm of dcis in October and 2nd operation for clear margins in November. I'm currently having 20sessions of radiation feeling very lucky caught early etc, but after living with this I realise I need to have nipple reconstruction the dr only mentioned tattooing he did say if radiation changes breast size he will fix it at the moment it looks more or less same as other one , my question is can nipple reconstruction be done on public system or do I need to pay for this surgery? Has anyone else had this done not nipple reconstruction and mastectomy just nipple reconstruction thanks.

Hi Lori, Thank you for the message nipple reconstruction. In regards to your question about availability and cost of reconstruction. If you are currently being treated as a public patient the reconstruction you will continue to be treated under that scheme throughout treatment including reconstructive surgery. Changes in your breast tissue will become more apparent after the radiotherapy treatment is completed and up to six weeks afterwards. Initially the internal and external breast tissue has an inflammatory response. As the breast heals from this, and for up to 2 years afterwards, the breast tissue will change its texture and may reduce in size. The treated breast will then stabilize in size and shape. The timing of reconstruction of the breast following a radiotherapy is important because of the process or timeline of the recovery. If reconstruction is done too soon after the treatment reconstruction can fail or may need to be revised again as the breast continues to change. In your circumstance the reconstructive phase of treatment is started by tattooing in the areola area giving it an improved cosmetic appearance. Later as the breast completes healing and its new shape is formed. The nipple reconstruction is performed. If you would like to speak with one of our peer to peer volunteers who has had a nipple reconstruction procedure or you have further questions about your treatment feel free to speak with one of our cancer nurses on the Cancer Nurseline on 1800200700. Kind Regards
