After watching aine Lawlors documentary on RTE I was very interested in the fact that she had her ovaries and Fallopian tribes removed to decrease her chances of cancer there. My father has had lung , prostate and intestinal cancer and my mother has had colon cancer. This is something I am considering in the future. Just wondering what the women here think

Hi WicklowLady,
I hope all is well with you
Concerning removal of ovaries, I'm not sure that it is applicable in your case as you were not ER+.
Here is an interesting article about ovary removal.

Hi Wicklow Lady! I too watched the documentary (found the first part very hard to watch, just too close to the bone), and I too was thinking of the decision AL made. At one level, I can understand her motivation (her mother had breast cancer, which then migrated to her ovaries and ultimately killed her), and I am sure she researched the topic within an inch of its life before making that decision. But in the absence of a clearly identifiable genetic marker, isn't this a all little random? What is to say that her cancer could not come back somewhere else?![This image has been removed. I am not aware of any family history of cancer in my immediate family (thankfully), apart from my niece, diagnosed within weeks of myself last May!!
By the way, the documentary was terrific. The topic (massive scientific advances in treatment and potential for future survivability) was brilliant, but I can think of several more topics which would deserve a documentary of their own. The medical team/patient relationship for one, and the failure sometimes of the former to listen enough to the latter and to help the latter retain some sense of control over their lives... But that's probably just a hobby horse of mine
