Second surgery after DCIS diagnosis

1. Just back yesterday for the ‘results’ of lumpectomy. I wasn’t expecting surgeon today to say another surgery is needed. Does this happen much? Is there someone out there with the same experience?
2. Also, I would love to know what are the chances of needing radiotherapy afterwards, surgeon hopes I might avoid it, but again, I would love to hear from people.
3. (Couldn’t sleep last night, was inclined to blame surgeon for missing the extra calcification that now bring need for the second surgery. )
All help welcome.
Hi Daysey,
Thank you for posting and I am very sorry to read about your diagnosis and that you will need further surgery. It understandably must have been a huge shock for you to get that news.
Sometimes, further surgery is needed after a lumpectomy to ensure that all cancerous cells are removed. When the tissue is sent to the lab, doctors are able to identify if there are some cancerous cells still present by looking at the margins. Using your biopsy and scan results and your consultants expertise, they will be able to advise if radiation is needed or not. They should discuss the potential benefits and risks of having further treatment.
I wonder would you be able to phone us on 1800 200 700? We could discuss your situation in more detail to get a better understanding of what is happening for you, potential questions for your consultant and we also may be able to arrange to put you in touch with another lady who has had a similar experience. I hope this information is helpful and that we hear from you.
Kind regards,
Cancer nurse.
