Sentinal node biopsey
I had a wide local excision and sentinal node biopsy done this day last week. My scar is much bigger than I thought, around the nipple and right across the breast. That hasn't been too painful, but my God is the sentinal node biopsey scar sore and painful. Is this normal? It's definately not inflamed or infected but my underarm area feels a bit numb and feels as if its being pinched all the time.

Hi fighter xxx It took me a couple of weeks to get my arm back in action and worst thing is that it was my right arm and I'm right handed so it was hard to completely avoid lifting etc.... Opening doors were the pain for me!!! I only had a scar around the top of my nipple and when I went back the next time for a wider exision, same place.... Mastectomy was same place too but off to the side aswell.... The blasted skin is all puckered above my nipple from the surgery and my poor nipple is nearly up at my armpit at this stage It seems to be smoothing out a bit though since the last 'fill'.... Just keep thinking now that I should have gotten rid of it at the same time but hopefully the end results will be good....
Thanks for the replies. Driving is agony as it is my left side, so changing gears and using the handbreak hurts, I am trying to drive as little as possible. Also, I cannot find a comfortable bra, just got two non-wired ones in M&S today, and they gave no support whatsoever. I'm not very big chested but find it more uncomfortable going braless. I also tried one of those Belvia bras that are being advertised from Heatons - €16 no support whatsoever either, I may as well be wearing a t-shirt. Felling really peeed off today over the whole diagnosis and soreness especially when I don't even know what treatment awaits me yet. Grrrrrr.
Hi Fighter, yes my underarm is killing me. After my lumpectomy and 5 lymph nodes removed the first 5 days were fine then the underarm pain started, went to the doc 2 days later as the boob was going slightly red. Got antibiotics as had infection. Went for results 11 days later and underarm still unreal pain, they gave me more painkillers and a stronger painkiller that helps nerve pain. Even today 13 days since op to move or touch the underarm ( with clothes or sponge when washing ) is painful. Won't try driving yet as it is my left arm too. You seem to have the exact same cancer as me. Invasive ductal stage 1 grade 2, margins and nodes clear, er and pr positive. They were able to remove all of the cancer. (could they remove all of yours too. ) have not started any treatments yet. Was told it will be hormone, radiotherapy, (chemo ? ) meeting Dr next Friday to see. They said this doc is very much into % so he might say hormone such a % chemo such a % and get you to pick. I told the nurse as he is the Dr I will leave the choice to him as I think he would know best. The treatments are to prevent cancer returning. I bought support crop tops in M & S . Support fine ( remember to adjuct the strap) and lovely and soft, good from one who only wears underwire bras. Wearing the cropped tops 24 hours at the moment. Would love to hear from you. Take care G xxx

Hi Fighter,
I had pretty much the same op done on 30th May. I was quite sore for about 2 weeks afterwards. I think you just have to bear with it. It's three weeks tomorrow since my op and I'm feeling much better now. Still slight discomfort, but nothing I can't put up with. I was surprised I didn't have to go back to the hospital for two weeks and that was only to speak to the surgeon about the op and my treatment going forward and at the end of our meeting he just had a quick look at the scar.
If you are worried you should give your breast care nurse a ring, at least you won't be worrying unneccesarily then, God knows we have enough to be thinking/worrying about at this early stage.
Hope you feel better soon and best of luck to you,
Shirls
