Waiting time for surgery
I had to have a full mastectomy 2 years ago, and I ended up waiting nearly 18 months before seeing the plastic surgeon about reconstruction even though I asked to be referred before I left the hospital after my initial surgery. I was told I wouldn’t be a good candidate for an implant so they suggested the diep flap, which I’m on the list for. I was told the wait time would be 3-6 months and I can’t get an update from anyone as to where I am on the list or how much longer it might be. I’m in St James Hospital. How long have other people had to wait for surgery? Or does anyone know who would be best to talk to? I’m finding it harder and harder to cope with as time goes on, I’m crying every day and struggling to sleep.
Thank you, I’ll give them a call. I didn’t think they’d be the ones to contact.
Hi Ndarcy
I hope my reply will not upset you even more because I promise its not my intention.
My advice is to relax, don't stress about it , it will happen . Think of how far you've come, recon is just another step. I had my masectomy 4 years ago and still waiting ( different hospital) but I'm just so greatful to be doing so well, I genuinely do not let it get to me. I did too much crying during my chemo and scan days, I don't allow the flat side upset me.
But we are all very different and if you feel that this is not helping your mental health then I do agree with Jenni. Contact the breast care team They should advise you. Best of luck , you deserve it x
Thank you, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been waiting so long. I weirdly didn’t cry that much going through the chemo and surgery, I think I was just in shock. I had a 1 and a 4 year old at the time and I just think it didn’t all sink in til later. I’ve tried so hard to not let it get to me, I really have. Personally it’s getting harder the longer it goes on. I’m going to call my breast care nurse next week, I don’t know why but I didn’t think they’d be the one to contact. Thank you again
You don't need to explain to me, I fully understand and you are well within your rights to feel that way. I too had very small kids and we all cope differently. I hope you get the clousure on it soon. Best of luck x x
Hi ndarcy
Sorry to hear that you had to have a full mastectomy 2 years ago. It would be best to talk to your breast care nurse about how much longer you have to wait for surgery.
Wishing you the best of luck with the surgery when it happens.
Best wishes
