Weight after chemo

Last reply: 22 May 2013 08:40

Hi girls
Much to my horror I've found I've put on a stone since diagnosis and two weeks ago set about cleaning up the eating act and am slowly getting back to walking and slow jogging, having been an avid runner/ gold weight watchers member for 10 years. So I have the tools at my disposal........
Anyhow in the two weeks, the scale has not budged one iota, and needless to say I am getting a bit peed off as I am trying!
Am I being too ambitious trying to do this 3 weeks after chemo? Has anyone had trouble and did they overcome it? I haven't even gone on tamoxifen yet! Yikes!!!!! Help!!!!!!

Well I went back to WW when I started radiotherapy and I only went three times it was just too much with everything else. I did put up weight but I've decided now just to control it don't think I'm losing but at least I'm not gaining. It's just too much to be depriving myself after everything I've gone through. Just give yourself a chance, little steps as they say. Our bodies are all over the place so it may take a while before it settles down. I can't exercise as my leg pains me which would drive you mad, but I have to be patient

Hi neadi I also put on weight with the chemo, I think it was the anti sickness meds that did it to me, I never knew when I was full!! First few weeks of tamoxifen I lost a good bit of weight because it eliminated my appetitie, but now I am back to normal. Definitely don't over do it with the excercise, your body is still healing after chemo, there is plenty of time to get fit when ur feeling better. I only starting back jogging recently and I am being very careful not to over do it with the expanders, I'm nearly 6 months post op!!
Take it easy on yourself!!

Maybe I am being too hard on myself- I'm just so desperate to get some bit of the old me back. It'll just take time I guess....

Hi Neadi,

I was told that it is is very important to keep my weight under control (BMI less than 25) to reduce my risk of recurrence. It's not easy, especially with Tamoxifen.

For you just 3 weeks out of chemo might be too early to be over the effects of the steroids. I don't know. Don't give up. When you get more energy back, it will probably be easier.

Take care

Kath

Neadi, like you I put up a stone on chemo. Ate all around me for 5+ months but was not particularly ill during the process so it was probably worth it! I joined WW the day I started rads. I had head scarves on me was missing eye brows/lashes but no one ever asked me if I was ok to do WW!!! I signed whatever consent forms were required!

I had done WW before so knew the drill. I decided the only way I could loose that stone was to be absolutely rigid with tracking and weighing/portion sizes. I also parked 15-20min walk away from the mater private so that I got exercise in nearly every day. I have to say that within 8 weeks I had lost that stone. I was so so thrilled.

It has been three years since that "driven" me stood on the WW scales and I am completely embarrassed to say that I have put that stone back on Image removed. Being back in work and juggling a four day week and having a five and six year old does not allow for much exercise. I have
however started going for 30min walks with the six year old who flies along on his bike - now if I couldonly do that more than once a week and be more controlled with portion sizes and treats i would be skinny!!!

Thanks lindy!!
That really gives me hope! I just have to keep plugging away at it and hope for the best.......
My husband is great for getting me out and about on walks, but last night I twisted my ankle!! Eek!!!
Gonna give it a few days to recover and off we go again...walking the mini marathon in 10 days time so have to be ready....
Off to rads number 3......joy! Image removed.
