Blood Cancer and Booster Vaccine
Hello
I was diagnosed with a blood cancer this year and I'm due to start treatment at the end of the year. I haven't received any information about the booster vaccine and when I asked in St James I genuinely didn't understand the answer. Does anyone know if people with blood cancers fall under the bracket of immunocompromised and should we expect to be offered the third vaccine?
Thanks
David
Thanks for the reply. I haven't heard from anyone since and the HSE line is impossible to get through to. Hopefully I'll get some notification soon.
Thanks
Sean
Hi David,
I am a past blood cancer patient under Dr grant and radiation, remission since July. I just got booster vaccine this week from one of their referrals. I hope that helps. Best wishes, D
Thanks D,
Hi David
Thank you for posting your query on our online community. Hopefully you will hear from others and their experience soon.
Reading the NIAC recommendations it is saying that all patients receiving treatment or are about to have treatment for a blood cancer are recommended to have an additional dose of an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna). This would include those with a blood cancer on ‘watch and wait’.
If you are under 60 then your haematologist will arrange for you to be added to the HSE list. If over 60, you should hear directly from the HSE anyway. If you are in any doubt about whether you have been added to a list do contact your medical team. You can also ring the HSE vaccination helpline number at 1800 700 700.
Do phone our support line and speak to a cancer nurse if you would like to discuss this further at 1800 200 700.
We wish you the very best with your pending treatment
Kind regards
Cancer nurse
