Dad going into hospital tomorrow

Hi sorry to hear about your Dad I know first hand that you are worried.
To male a long story short I had my right lung removed eight weeks ago I am 62 gave up smoking at least 10 years ago but the damage must have been done then The cancer had spread to my glands So I had to have Chemo and Radium first to get the glands clear.

We were delighted to be able to have the operation. When the operation is over I reckon we are on the right side of things

Eight weeks on I am up every day and feeling a little better each day I find it a slow recovery.

There are no two people the same so do not try to compare your father with anyone else.

I was drugged for pain and have quite a bit of pain yet. The doctors will give your Dad pain relief so it will not be so bad.

Hi Irene,

We went up all ready for his procedure thinking it was the big lung op but what it turned out to be was a biopsy of the "hot glands" to see if they are cancerous or precancerous or just rectionary?! So it was a huge diaapointment when we found this out as we were all revved up for the big one, including my Dad. He back home today, bit sore after the bio, they went in through his neck, but still in high spirits. He's also put on nearly a stone in a month which I'm taking as a good sign. It's just it'll take ten days to get results from the gland bio and now they also want him to go in for a brain CT scan (he's already had a lung biopsy, one where he was awake and one where he was asleep, a CT scan and a PET scan) I asked the oncology nurse and she said that the brain CT is just procedure before thet operate, its just the operation seems to be getting further and further away and I just keep thinking time is of the essence. I know they have to investigate everything, its just I keep thinking it must be so horrible for myDad sitrting and waiting knowing that this tumour is inside him. He says he can feel it like pressure at night time if he lies on his side so obviously he's well aware of it. Did you have to go down the same route as my Dad too Irene? Its just I am so delighted that they can operate that am worried its taken so long

The doctors know what they are doing Yes I went and had a camera put down while I was asleep to see how the lungs were The next day I had biopsy on Glands they cut me on the neck across one of my rinkly bits and you would not notice it if you were not told (I was asleep while this procedure went on) I had the brain scan the lot as you describe your father They get a full picture before doing anything and this is good for they know exactly what they are doing when the big OP comes I am up each day and go to town But still have discomfort
The waiting is hard but it will soon be over I had not two many weeks to wait after the biopsy to the operation Goof luck to your family and your Dad

Thanks so much Irene for the good thoughts and prayers. Its great that your up and about after 9 weeks. Would you be in a lot of discomfort? My Dad is kinda worried how he'll be after, cause they've asked him if he has a bathroom downstairs, which he doesn't so we are wondering how incapacitated he will be after. Also did they take your glands as well as your lung Irene? And did you have to have anymore treatment? I know these are personal questions so feel free to not respond to them. I just find a lot of people are very negative, and I find that hard to deal with as I think being positive is hugely important! Were you kept in hospital long after your procedure Irene? Dad feeling pretty of since gland bio, still has change his dressings and the opening is about 2 inches across his neck just under adams apple. But he's complaining of s tabbing pains in his lung if he breaths in too rapidly or laughs sometimes, was wondering could that just be from the gland biio or is it the tumour.... God Irene its like i'm giving you the spainish inquesition.

I live in a bungalow and so the bathrooms are quite assessable. What about a commode in his room that would eliminate the stairs. Would there be a room down stairs that could be used temporally
Have you a health nurse in your area? She may be able to advise and will have the experience of many other people in our circumstances.
No they did not take out my glands as the Chemo and Radium cleared the cancer out of them.
I was 3 weeks in hospital after the Op Then did not do much for a few weeks after coming home Then began to get myself dressed and up around the kitchen going back and sitting down in arm chair or bed whatever my body told me. I had great help and thank God still have. I still have my rests I had 2 today. Take it as it comes never expect two much then things are a bonus when they happen for the good.
It is supposed to be a slow recovery that is what I’m told
