Lung Cancer Steroids

Last reply: 29 November 2024 22:19

I have a family member with lung cancer. We were told a few months ago there was no treatment. Up to 4 weeks ago his breathing had got much worse and was using oxygen a lot. Palliative care put him on steroids he feels fantastic and he hasn’t used his oxygen with a month since starting them. The steroids are being reduced. I’m wondering if anyone here have experienced an immediate come down after coming off the steroids. Is it possible to stay on the steroids longer if no side effects. Thank you

Hi Eliza1,

I do hope that you get some replies to your query.

I am so sorry that you and your family are going through this. I am sure this must be an incredible difficult time for you all.

Steroids often help to reduce inflammation and often patients feel many beneficial effects. They may need to be discontinued due to side effects but often they can be continued sometimes on a lower dose.

This is something that the Doctor (Oncologist or Palliative care doctor) would decide. We would recommend that you talk this over with them and they will be able to discuss the plan going forward.

If you would like to talk to one of our cancer Nurses please do not hesitate to contact us on 1800 200 700 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse
