Rectourethral fistula

My father has a fistula, his surgeon will not operate as he is too weak from infections due to this fistula.
Has anyone info on treating this further? It seems awful to be left hanging like this.
I hear of other treatments, but I don't know where to ask? Is there any pioneering doctors who have helped you?
Best,
G
Hi G,
Thank you for posting on the online community.
I am sorry to read about your fathers fistula and the problems that he is having with infections. I do hope that your father improves soon.
Have you spoken with your father about this and is he comfortable with the surgeons decision or does he wish to look at other options?
You might benefit from speaking with your fathers surgeon or the team a little more. The surgeon might explain more about the risks of operating on your father. He might also explain if he feels that this might improve in the near future. You could also ask if the surgeon is aware of any other options that may be available for your father.
It may be worthwhile seeking a second opinion from a different doctor to review your fathers case. I have attached a link for our page on requesting a second opinion here. With a second opinion a different consultant can review your fathers medical history and then they may agree with the current plan or offer alternatives.
Regardless of whether you are speaking with your fathers current surgeon or someone offering a second opinion it is good to have questions written down that you are hoping to get an answer to. Maybe discuss these with your dad and family in advance of any meeting.
