Mastectomy

Last reply: 03 September 2021 20:52

Hi. I had a mastectomy a week ago and cannot bring myself to look at my chest area. I have coped with 6 months of chemo, but find this part very difficult. Any advice?

Hi BerM

Just take things one day at a time and look at it when you are ready too. Don't be too hard on yourself, it's a big thing that has happened to you and it takes time to get used to the idea of not having one of your breasts. You could also look at it like this that the mastectomy has saved your life.

Wishing you the best of luck with what comes next.

Best wishes

Hi BerM,

Thank you for posting on the online community.

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of breast cancer and that you had a mastectomy a week ago. As Jenni mentioned, you need to take things one step at a time. It might be helpful to speak with your breast care nurse, she might be able to offer some advice and support.

The Irish Cancer Society also provides a survivor support programme where you could speak with a trained volunteer who has gone through a similar journey as you. I have attached information here about the survivor support programme. The Irish Cancer Society offers a free counselling service to people who are impacted by cancer. The emotional side of cancer can have a huge impact on people, a trained counsellor can help you make sense of your feelings. I have attached a link to our webpage on counselling here.

If you would like more information, advice or support please feel free to call our nurses on the Support Line, Freephone 1800 200 700, Monday - Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse.
