Refuse hormone therapy

Last reply: 07 January 2025 21:24

Hi everyone!
I have stage 3 breast cancer HER+ and hormone receptive. My doctor proposed first chemo then surgery and then hormone therapy. However due to side effects and what I understand only minimal reduction of recurrence risk I think I don’t want to do hormone therapy. Any other person decided the same? Thanks!

Dear Daphne.

Thank you for posting on our online forum. I am sorry to read that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I hope that your treatment is going well, and you are getting the support you need.

I also hope that you hear from others who may be able to address your query. In the meantime, I am wondering if you would like to speak to one of our fabulous peer volunteers who have had similar treatment to yourself. Peer Support is the Irish Cancer Society’s one-to-one support programme, providing emotional and practical support to people diagnosed with cancer. I have provided a link with more information  here.

You can also speak to one of the cancer nurses who will be happy to provide support, advice, or a listening ear. Our number is 1800 200 700, and we are here Monday-Friday, from 0900-1700.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse

Hi Daphne

Sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with breast cancer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and have been on hormone therapy for about 8 months. I'm coping well with it and don't have any side effects from it.

Wishing you the best of luck whatever you decide to do.

Best wishes
Jenni53

I had stage 2 BC had surgery and 4 weeks radiotherapy and started anastrozole in November. I am struggling with the fatigue, pins and needles poor sleep, sore joints, weight gain and today when at GP for chest infection my blood pressure was up…. It’s never up. I feel older than ever and really no one seems to be able to advise me. Nobody can give a risk assessment rating on reoccurrence on taking it versus not taking it. I am so angry about the whole thing and feeling trapped!
