Call for Daffodil centre volunteersHermitage Medical Clinic, Lucan

The Irish Cancer Society has created a new information, support and advice Daffodil Centre in the Hermitage Medical Clinic for cancer patients, their families and anyone concerned about cancer, and we are now looking for volunteers to help with the running of this centre.

The role of the Daffodil Centre Volunteer is integral to the running of the service. Volunteers welcome enquirers to the centre, assessing their needs and signposting to the appropriate information. Where the enquirer's needs are straightforward, whilst working in line with the volunteer guidelines, volunteers will listen and respond to the enquirer, helping the enquirer find what they are looking for, e.g., locating leaflets on cancer prevention, browsing the centre's computer for information, or accompanying them to a clinical area.

Where enquirer's needs are more complex, volunteers refer to the Cancer Information Service Nurse or arrange a suitable time for the enquirer to meet with the nurse.

The volunteer will answer telephone enquiries if the Cancer Information Service Nurse is with other enquirers or unavailable. The volunteer can direct enquirers to the Cancer Information Service (1800 200 700) and other Irish Cancer Society services or local and national organisations, as appropriate. If the Cancer Information Service Nurse is unavailable the volunteer can make a telephone call on behalf of the enquirer as necessary.

Volunteers are involved in the day-to-day running of the Centres. This involves carrying out tasks such as ensuring the centre is tidy and well maintained, helping to promote the centre by distributing leaflets and posters at designated display points within the hospital. It also involves participating in cancer awareness campaigns and relaying any key cancer prevention messages outlined by the Irish Cancer Society.

In order to become a Daffodil Centre volunteer, applicants must complete an assessment period which includes an interview, four days' training and Garda vetting. Volunteers must also agree to work within the operational policies and guidelines of the Daffodil Centre and abide by the volunteer role specification at all times.

Upon completion of the training process, an assessment will determine whether the application is suited to the Daffodil Centre Volunteer role.
