Clonmel and Offaly groups big winners at 2019 X-HALE Youth Awards
Young people from across Ireland showcase short films encouraging each other to be smoke free
Clonmel Youth Training Centre and Offaly Traveller Movement Youth Project have been announced as the big winners of the Irish Cancer Society’s X-HALE Youth Awards 2019.
Clonmel Youth Centre’s film was called “Evening News” and featured a hard hitting report on smoking, with medical interviews and a vox pox on the impact of smoking.
Offaly Traveller Movement Youth Project’s film “Take Two” focused on the difference in two lives – a smoker and a non-smoker. The short film looked at ways in which smoking affects beauty and skincare, taking part in sports and money.

Speaking at the awards today, Joanne Vance, Community Programmes Manager with the Irish Cancer Society said, “X-HALE is going from strength to strength and this year has seen a record amount of film entries to the competition. I want to congratulate the overall winners Clonmel Youth Training Centre and Offaly Traveller Movement Youth Project who both submitted fantastic, thought-provoking films. We are very proud of all the young people and their youth organisations who have showcased their films today at our national event and promoted their work in their communities.”
“While smoking rates have declined in recent years, there is a still huge amount of work to do to prevent young people from taking up smoking and supporting those who do, to quit. That is why it is so inspiring to see young people coming together to campaign on against tobacco at local, national and European level. Ultimately, we want to see this leading to a completely smoke-free generation,” Vance concluded.
Over 400 young people from 56 youth and community groups across 22 counties showcased their anti-tobacco films in the Helix, Dublin today. The groups have written, directed and starred in their films and have worked hard to promote them through events in their communities.
About X-HALE
This is the ninth year of the X-HALE programme, a youth smoking prevention initiative of the Irish Cancer Society. The programme aims to de-normalise smoking and encourage young people to drive the movement towards a tobacco free generation.
X-HALE was supported by the Society’s recent European Health Award for NGO’s working to prevent tobacco use win which meant it was able to fund more groups through the programme.
After today, the Irish Cancer Society will be inviting X-HALE participants to apply to attend EU funded Smoke Free Youth Exchanges in Sweden and the UK over the coming year
