Indy Power and Ethan Miles talk about the links between alcohol and cancer

Ethan Miles and Indy Power urge public to ‘know their standards’ this Christmas

With Christmas around the corner and the party season almost in full swing, Ethan Miles, the popular barman from First Dates Ireland and Indy Power, Food Blogger, Author and Cook are supporting the Irish Cancer Society in making the public aware of the sobering fact of the link between alcohol and cancer. They are reminding people that there is no ‘safe’ level of alcohol drinking and calling on people to know the size of a standard drink, which is around the same as a glass of beer or a small glass of wine, and limit the amount of alcohol they are consuming on a night out or pouring for others.

Kevin O’Hagan, Cancer Prevention Manager at the Irish Cancer Society said, “While of course we want people to enjoy the Christmas season, it is also important to remember the more you drink the greater the risk of cancer. Alcohol causes seven forms of cancer, and people consuming even low to moderate amounts are at risk. Irish people particularly at this time of year tend to drink way over the recommended guidelines which is 11 standards drinks over the course of a week for women and 17 for men. It’s really important that people are aware of how much alcohol they are consuming, and how much is in a standard drink.

“900 new cancers and 500 cancer deaths every year are attributable to alcohol in Ireland. The more you drink, the higher your risk so we’re simply asking people to be aware of what is in a standard drink when on a night out or pouring a drink for others.” he concluded.

The Irish Cancer Society will hold an event called Alcohol and Cancer: The Sobering Facts on Wednesday, 7 December at 6.30pm in Wood Quay, Dublin City Civic Offices, Dublin 8. All are welcome.
