Every three hours a woman in Ireland is diagnosed with breast cancer

Support Get the Girls Day and wear a pink ribbon today (Friday, October 5th)

Today, Friday, October 5th, the Irish Cancer Society is calling on everyone in Ireland to come together and support Get the Girls Day by buying and wearing a pink ribbon to help raise breast cancer awareness and fund the Society’s cancer projects and support services. Last year volunteers across the country raised a fantastic €730,000 and this year the Irish Cancer Society is hoping to raise even more money for people who are affected by breast cancer. Latest data shows that 2,671 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2010. It is estimated that women have a 1 in 10 chance of developing breast cancer during their lifetime. Speaking about Get the Girls Day John McCormack, CEO, Irish Cancer Society said, “Most people in Ireland know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. We want to encourage everyone to do something to ensure that the Irish Cancer Society can continue to provide its free cancer services and support for people when they need it, so that no woman or man has to face their cancer journey alone. Now more than ever, we need funding for our work, so we’re appealing to everyone to think of the women in their lives this October and show their support. “You can get involved and Get the Girls this October by visiting www.getthegirls.ie and registering your event. There are plenty of ways to get involved such as Get the Girls running with a fun run, Get the Girls grooming with a pamper night, Get the Girls singing with a karaoke night, Get the Girls knitting with a craft day, Get the Girls retro with an eighties night – there are lots of ways to make a difference.” The month long Get the Girls campaign kicks off today with Get the Girls Day, when hundreds of people across the country will be selling ribbons and pins in towns and cities. For more ways to get involved or to make a donation, visit www.getthegirls.ie. It is that easy to make a difference. [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"1255","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"320","width":"480"}}]] Get the Girls is kindly supported by Centra, Irelands leading convenience retailer. The Irish Cancer Society has also produced a special "Breast Cancer - What you should know" leaflet.
