Irish Cancer Society Receives $75,000 Grant from IBM to help Build a Smarter Planet

The Irish Cancer Society has been awarded a grant of US$75,000 from IBM towards helping to build a smarter planet.  The grant, known as an IBM Centennial Grant, is part of IBM’s Centennial Celebration of Service.

The Irish Cancer Society received the grant to help develop a smart cloud-based system to support the expansion of the Society's "Care to Drive" programme, which provides free patient transportation to and from cancer treatment appointments. The new system will provide technological solutions for scheduling, route planning and mapping, volunteer reimbursement, and data management.

Head of Services at the Irish Cancer Society Mairead Lyons said, “We are delighted to be one of only 11 recipients globally of this grant in a highly competitive process from IBM. We partnered with IBM volunteers to help us develop a technological solution to enable us roll out our Care to Drive programme across the country. This programme will require significant administrative resources and we are delighted that IBM came on board to help us develop a solution which will enable us to make the best use of resources raised by the public to support this expansion nationally.”

“It is a major success for the Irish Cancer Society to be recognised by IBM globally as leaders in innovation and to be awarded this grant” Ms Lyons concluded.

“We value the opportunity to give back to the local communities we serve,” said Deirdre Kennedy, Manager, IBM Ireland Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs. “To commemorate our 100 year anniversary we are helping the Irish Cancer Society build a smarter planet and make a difference in the lives of people in Ireland.”
