Profile: Hilary, Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse

Hilary, from Co Clare, has been a Night Nurse for the Irish Cancer Society for over 20 years. She’s often asked if it’s a sad job, but the truth is she wouldn’t change her job providing end of life care and support for cancer patients and their loved ones for the world.

“It takes the fear and anxiety away from families. Night time is a very vulnerable time, the usual supports are not available and our presence allows families to rest.”

Hilary remembers one time when she was providing end of life care to a priest in his residence at a church. With no one else around, Hilary discovered the priest had no remaining family alive. Hilary let his congregation know and they all gathered together to send their brother out of this world in song and prayer.

A huge thank you to Hilary for sharing her story with us.
