Relay For Life Carlow takes place this weekend

One Day | One Night | One Community | One Fight

Relay For Life Carlow is taking place this weekend, 22-23 June, at Ducket’s Grove, Carlow.

Relay for Life is a 24-hour community celebration which honours current and former cancer patients, their families and friends. Teams of friends, neighbours, families and colleagues come together in groups of 15/20 people to take part in the event. All funds raised through sponsorship will go to the Irish Cancer Society to support our mission of eliminating cancer.

Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 24-hour event. Otherwise team members are free to socialise, picnic, play games, enjoy 24-hour live entertainment and participate in lots of fun activities! Everybody in the community is invited to come along and experience this inspiring event of celebration and commemoration.

There are some unforgettable moments in every Relay For Life event.

The Survivors’ Lap is an inspirational start to the event where cancer survivors of all ages are invited to begin the Relay by walking the first lap of the course, cheered on by family, friends, and teams from the community.

The Candle of Hope ceremony takes place later in the evening when darkness begins to fall. Before the event everyone in the community is invited to dedicate a Candle of Hope to someone they know who has been touched by cancer. As the evening approaches, the candles are set around the track and lit by participants. It is during this time that the true meaning of Relay really hits home.

Cancer will affect one in three people in Ireland during their lifetime. The most recent data from the National Cancer Registry shows that 33,741 people were diagnosed with cancer in 2010, with 348 of those in Carlow.
