Kildare was the centre of attention last week (Tuesday, August 14th) when one of the world's greatest racehorse trainers went head-to-head with one of the world's top jump jockeys in the Hurling for Cancer Research match at St Conleth's Park, Newbridge.

Bolger, the man behind such racing superstars as Teofilo, New Approach and St Jovite, was the driving force for the event, which raised much-needed funds for Irish Cancer Society Research.

His Jim Bolger's Stars side took on Davy Russell's Best, led by the Cheltenham Gold Cup winning jockey and stable jockey of Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary's Gigginstown House Stud operation.

Michael O'Leary himself was also on duty in Newbridge as one of four celebrity umpires, alongside RTE TV presenter Gráinne Seoige, Olympic Gold medallist from Melbourne 1956 Ronnie Delany and former Meath GAA star and Sunday Game analyst Colm O'Rourke. There was no shortage of expertise among the management teams with eight-time All-Ireland winning Kilkenny manager Brian Cody and Liam Griffin, who led Wexford to All-Ireland glory in 1996, serving as bainisteorí for the day. Legendary former Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey was in the somewhat unusual role of match referee for the game, with Gráinne's sister and media personality in her own right Síle Seoige, Irish Sports Woman of the Year, jockey Katie Walsh and former Ireland soccer star and Sunderland FC chairman Niall Quinn others involved on the day. A huge well done to all involved, and thanks to Kildare TV for their footage from the event above. Follow the link for more information on Irish Cancer Society Research, and if you'd like to know more about fundraising for Irish Cancer Society Research, call 1850 60 60 60.
