Donegal friends win international award for Irish Cancer Society fundraising
Agnes and Eileen Doherty awarded Stand-Out Global Relayers
Congratulations to Eileen Doherty and Agnes Doherty from Buncrana, Donegal who were awarded "Stand-Out Global Relayers" by Global Relay for Life in June 2020.
Eileen and Agnes were recognised for their innovation and creativity in promoting Donegal's Relay for Life to galvanise their community in the fight against cancer.
''A global pandemic may have tried to stop us but we wont give up until cancer does!" say Eileen and Agnes. They are life-long friends and members of a team called 'Prancers Against Cancer' that participates annually in Relay For Life Donegal in support of the Irish Cancer Society. Eileen and Agnes take part in Relay for Life in memory of their family, friends and team members who they have sadly lost to cancer.
"We were devastated when we heard that Relay for Life Donegal 2020 was to be cancelled due to Covid-19. We knew we wanted to do something to support the Irish Cancer Society during this pandemic.
"We decided to run the distance of a marathon in May and we set up a Facebook fundraiser page. Due to Covid-19 we were unable to run together for the first few weeks, but we were able to run together when restrictions were lifted. We are very grateful for all the support and generosity we received, and we were extremely proud to present €1,639 to the Irish Cancer Society at the end."
Thank you Eileen and Agnes, and well done on your "Stand-Out Global Relayers" award!
