"I won’t stop telling people about the importance of our work and how we need their support"

- Deirdre

As Store Manager of the Irish Cancer Society Shop in Kilkenny City, Deirdre Power is on the frontline of meeting the public who generously donate to support our work. “It is my role to work with staff and volunteers to process donations received, maximise sales and ensure day-to-day procedures are completed according to organisation guidelines.”

“I’m also the point of contact for anybody who comes into the store and wants to know a bit more about what the Society does and how they can support our work even further.”

"I wanted to use my retail skills and knowledge for charitable gain not a gain within mainstream retail."

- Deirdre

For Deirdre, the switch from commercial retail to the charity sector was a natural one. “I joined the Irish Cancer Society in March 2020, and I wanted to work here because I know the amazing support we give to people going through cancer - to patients and their families. I wanted to use my retail skills and knowledge for charitable gain not a gain within mainstream retail. I liked what the ICS had to offer and how they value their employees.”

"We’re making a difference everyday because our presence in towns and cities all over Ireland raises awareness of cancer."

- Deirdre

Deirdre’s favourite thing about her work is the variety. “Now two days are the same. Everyday is different. You meet so many different people, you work with so many volunteers and hear their stories. You have new customers, new donors visiting the store on a daily basis. We’re making a difference everyday because our presence in towns and cities all over Ireland raises awareness of cancer, raises awareness of the supports we have for patients and their families, and we raise vital funds.”

“The one thing I would want people to know about us is the important role they can play in helping us to do more through donating, volunteering and fundraising and that the money raised by the charity goes back in to provide essential services. I won’t stop telling people about the importance of our work and how we need their support.”
