I'm so lucky to have this job...it's such a great privilege to be able to go in and make such a difference."

Susan has worked as a Night Nurse with the Irish Cancer Society since 2015, a role that involves providing end of life care for patients and families in their own home.

In her career Susan has had extensive experience of working in palliative care units and hospices, a direction she decided to take as a result of witnessing the value of end of life care in the home for her own mother. She has a unique perspective on the importance of this service for family members having taken some time out to support the palliative care of her own brother after he developed cancer, an experience that Susan says has given her a greater understanding of how family members want their loved ones to be cared for.

Susan has witnessed an incredible cross-section of humanity during her time as a Night Nurse, which involves a broad range of functions from talking patients and families through what is happening and administering medications, to looking after their emotional and psychological needs and ensuring as comfortable an end of life experience as possible.

Did you know? The Irish Cancer Society Night Nursing service is one of a kind in Ireland

Night Nursing is only made possible thanks to funds raised through Daffodil Day. Thanks to your support last year, over 1,880 cancer patients were able to spend their precious final days at home, surrounded by loved ones and cared for by an Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse.

Consider getting involved on Daffodil Day so we can continue to offer this service to families affected by cancer.
