What are the X-hale awards

The X-Hale Youth Awards Scheme is part of the Irish Cancer Society’s Young People and Smoking Initiative to generate a youth centred, positive, smoke-free initiative, for young people, in a way that is both sensitive and relevant to their community’s needs.

We would like to work with young people to address tobacco-related lifestyle issues and support them in the development of positive youth-led activities.

Ultimately we hope to empower young people to take ownership of their own health and make the commitment to smoke-free lifestyles.

X-HALE Youth Award Scheme Winners with John McCormack, CEO of ICS

Why the X-HALE Youth Award Scheme?

  • High smoking rates, particularly amongst young people, coupled with very high lung cancer rates nationally, means that something needs to be done about smoking.
  • Ireland needs to reduce the number of young people smoking, discourage young people from starting to smoke in the first place, and support young smokers who want to quit.
  • ICS has lots of experience in cancer prevention, smoking cessation and health promotion. We know that 1 in 3 cancers are linked to smoking. We also know that 9 out of 10 lung cancers are preventable. So why do people smoke, when they know it is doing them damage?
  • The Irish Cancer Society knows that it doesn’t have all answers. Although we are new to working with young people in community settings, we know that young people have to be part of the picture if things are going to change.

What is the X- HALE Youth Award Scheme?

  • We hope that the X-HALE youth Awards will catch the imagination of young people in communities where smoking is an issue. Young people regularly use their talents in a youth work setting, including music, dance, theatre, drama, art, sport, and social research. We know that young people, especially if they are given the chance, are imaginative, innovative and are able to make a difference.
  • The X Hale Youth Award Scheme will create positive opportunities to:
    • Work in partnership to share our knowledge and experience and to open up an honest debate amongst young people about smoking in Ireland.
    • Encourage future young leaders, through practical skills training, to advocate for healthy, smoke-free lifestyles in their communities.
    • Support the development of creative tobacco-free campaigning activities, using a variety of media, for young people aged between 10 and 21 years.
    • Assist youth groups to develop positive alternatives for young people to persuade them not to take up smoking.
    • Empower you to empower your local community to take action to address health inequalities and the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine addiction on their community’s health.

How does the Award Scheme work?

  • Award recipients will get the opportunity to demonstrate how they will tackle the area of smoking amongst young people in their community. They will prepare and deliver a local community awareness project with a tobacco-related theme, relevant to their target audience: young people aged from 10 to 21 years of age.

The Award Scheme will operate at three levels:

Local level: A grant will be given to help support the group in developing their project or campaign, which will end with a local event or launch to showcase the key messages in their local community.

Regional Level: Groups will participate in skills-based workshops, relevant to their project. Training will be provided by the Irish Cancer Society.

National Level: Groups will bring their final project to a national showcase event to highlight their achievements and raise awareness with other young people and encourage them to take action. The national showcase event will take place in late October during the mid-term break. Please check back here for further details closer to the time.
