What increases my risk of CML?

Older man looking concerned

The cause of CML is unknown. But there are certain things called risk factors that can increase your chance of developing the disease.

These include:

  • Age: CML commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. The average age at diagnosis is 50. It is very rare in children.
  • Exposure chemicals: Long-term exposure to benzene can increase your risk. Benzene can be found in things such as cigarette smoke and car exhaust fumes.
  • Previous cancer treatment: If you have been treated with high doses of radiotherapy before, it can increase your risk.
  • Exposure to radiation: Exposure to high doses of radiation in industry or nuclear accidents can increase your risk. This is unlikely to happen in Ireland.

Having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will definitely get cancer. Sometimes people with no risk factors get the disease. If you’re worried, talk to your GP or talk to one of our cancer nurses. Call our Support Line on 1800 200 700 or visit a Daffodil Centre.
