Can you eat sushi while on chemotherapy?

Last reply: 28 November 2022 12:19

I’ve read conflicting information and my nurse said to eat as you normally would if you can. But can you eat things like sushi, raw fish, seafood etc while on chemotherapy?
Thanks!

Hi Kransom.

We would recommend to speak with your team, they will be able to advise of any dietary restrictions.  Generally when having treatment that can lower your immunity it is not recommended to eat raw or undercooked meats, poultry, fish and shellfish.  Other foods to avoid include:

  • cheese or other foods or drinks made from unpasteurised milk
  • mould-ripened and blue-veined cheeses
  • meat and fish pate
  • yoghurt or other products that contain probiotics
  • cold meats that have been smoked but not cooked, such as salami
  • runny eggs, and any product containing raw egg – such as homemade mayonnaise.
  • Unwashed fruit, vegetables and salad.

I hope this information is helpful, please don’t hesitate to call us on 1800 200 700 if you would like to discuss this or for any information, support or advice.  Wishing you the best for your treatment.

Kind regards,

Cancer nurse.
