Diep Reconstruction

Last reply: 12 June 2013 23:46

Found out yesterday that I won't be needing chemo so I can ask for my reconstruction referral to be out in.
After research I'd really like the diep reconstruction if I was a candidate for it.
Can anyone tell me please where they got theirs done and by whom. I know they do it in Beaumont but is it done elsewhere?
If anyone has some recommendations about their own reconstruction diep or not I'd also love to hear them.
One last thing, did u have it done on the public or private system? I have health insurance but they won't tell me if its covered without a procedure code. Anyone have theirs done using their health ins or is it even covered?
Thanks xx

Hi aniq
I had my diep done last may in Vincents public as I was told at the time vhi didn't cover it.I had the mastectomy and recon done at same time in the public but was then transferred to the private for recovery.
I am delighted with the result so far,I have had a further surgery since to tweeq a bit and have another one coming up next may.Its not an easy op,mine took 14.5hrs and the recovery is hard but it is so worth it.Feel free to pm me at any time if you have any other questions.

Xx

HI Aniq,

have PM'd you as I've mentioned hospitals, surgeon names & my health insurer I didn't want to do this on a public forum.

Best wishes.

Hi Funky Chic! I have the exact same questions. I too would like to explore the option of DIEP but wondered about health insurance cover!

I have heard that this surgery is only performed by one surgeon in Dublin and that he is in Beaumont. I am in James at the moment but I think when it cones to this surgery, I'd like to know my options. Would you mind PM(ing) me also with any information?

Thanks so much,

Amanda

Hi Aniq

That was great news to get about no chemo!

Just thought you all might be interested in listening to Ann Guildea (From the Nualas) who was on the John Murray show on radio 1 this morning.
She was ringing from St.James where she is just getting over a DIEP recon. She was very pleased. Apparently she has tweeted a pic of it!

http://www.rte.ie/radio1/the-john-murray-show/ and then click on todays prog.

I heard Ann on the radio this morning , when I was on the way to hospital to do blood test for third chemo tomorrow , I could relate to a lot of the things she was saying . I did not do reconstruction because I am going to do radiotherapy , so I was advised against it . I think in the beginning I would have said that I did not care whether I ever done reconstruction, but as I moved forward I think that I might reconsider, they won't do it until at least a year after radiotherapy ,so by then I will have plenty of time , the only thing that puts me off is that its more surgery and I don't do very well after the other operations .I also had one registra telling me how beautiful my surgery looked , ( think he meant how well it healed ) but it just came out wrong !lol just as well I have some sense of humor left ! I am not very heavy and do not carry a lot of fat ,just over seven and half stone , my surgeon told me that I could have a long wait , I thought he meant that the waiting list was so long ,but he said that he could have wait to find some fat ! Real funny moments on this journey !:-) Image removed.Image removed.Image removed.Image removed.
