Infection with expander implant

Last reply: 08 April 2014 06:59

Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with an expander implant. Mine isnt settling , Ive already had an Cellulitis which cleared but now it seems to have a fluid buildup in a small area, kinda like a blister. I dont want to have to get it out but it may be the only option

Hi snoozy
I had an expander put in in November 2012.
Unfortunately I began to have problems pretty much from the get go.
What you describe sounds like a seroma- a build up of fluid behind the expander. I had one which just didn't go away and the docs were reluctant to remove.
Anyway to cut a long story short. My chest got very red and hot ( not sore) and they took a sample of the seroma fluid.
I was admitted to hospital and put on Iv antibiotics and after some days the analysis of the seroma came back - infected and my drugs were changed. The docs were doing everything to keep this expander, but I had enough ( also it was very near Xmas and I just wanted to go home!) and had the expander removed.
It was a bit of a pain being lopsided for a year, but I've just had a diep reconstruction and thankfully all is going ok.
If you've any questions ask away.
Take care
Xx
