Brca testing

Last reply: 31 May 2014 18:58

Hi there
I've just received my appointment for brca testing at the medical genetics clinic and am wondering what to expect on the day.. Will I just see the councillor and then have a blood test? Also, how long does it take before the results come back? Would appreciate any advice Image removed.

I did the test last week through the mater private. There was a ten minute chat with councillor, a consent form to be signed and then off to blood clinic to give one sample. They say results will be within 55 working days but usually sooner (6 or 7 weeks)

Hi Mardi

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.. It all sounds straightforward enough Image removed. Wonder why it takes so long for the result?

Hi resolute,
I had my brca testing done through the public system in Crumlin and it was much the same as mardi. They told me that the sample is sent to Birmingham to be tested, my results took about 2 months.
Good luck with it all they do explain everything at the clinic when you see them,

Hi Bernie

Thanks for that! I hadn't really thought about the process until the appointment arrived. My main reason for testing (apart from oncologist recommending it) is that it will clarify stuff for my daughter (and me too I guess) Image removed. ..

I had my blood taken for brca testing and they are banking the sample until I decide to have it tested.does anyone know the implications for my daughters if it is positive? ie as regards life insurance cover for them,if I am positive, do they need to declare it?I was diagnosed 13years ago and have only come across this wonderful forum now!

There s no obligation whatsoever for your daughters to declare anything if you test positive. It is a very personal decision how to handle giving information like that... If I had tested positive, I believe I would have held off telling my children until they were adults, after that it would be up to them to decide whether and when to take the test themselves.

Hello Carol
I am awaiting my brca result (should be in next week or two). When I met the councillor before the blood test she said that the result could have implications for my daughter and my son .. My understanding is that if it turns out I carry the gene then they both have a fifty percent chance of having it & if they have it then they too can pass it on to their children (50 percent rule applies again) ..
They are both adults & it would be they're decision whether to have the test or not (if I test positive they will be offered the test). I personally would prefer to know if I have an elevated risk of cancer as then I can research and make the decision based on that ..
I'm not sure if there are any insurance implications Image removed.

Best of luck with your decisions & take care
