Hi I recently got a PICC line put in but am having terrible trouble sleeping with it. I would usually sleep on my side but that is not possible now. Has anyone any tips on how to get a good night sleep with a PICC - Thanks

Thank you for your response. Following your advice I had a really good night sleep last night. Thank you.
Dear lovesdogs.
Thank you for posting on our online forum. I am sorry to read that you have been diagnosed with cancer and of the sleeping difficulties you are experiencing because of your PICC line. I do hope that you hear from others in a similar position who may be able to answer your query.
A good night's sleep is important, not only for your mental and physical well-being, but also prolongs your PICC line health and condition. Treating your PICC line as part of your body is a good first step in taking care of your PICC line. Following these simple tips for sleeping with a PICC may help to improve your sleep patterns.
1. Find a comfortable sleeping position that avoids putting pressure on your PICC line. Try lying on your back with your arms supported.
2. Position your pillows strategically around your arm to keep it elevated. This can help minimise the risk of damaging your PICC line .
3. Organising your bed before sleeping can help to ensure the safety for your line. Items like chargers, phones, and headphones can cause pulling of the PICC line. Before going to bed, check your surroundings to ensure that there is nothing that can cause any damage to your line.
4. Wearing tight clothing can cause irritation and pressure on the PICC. Wearing comfortable, loose clothing can add an extra layer of protection.
5. Ensuring that the PICC Line is secured is essential in keeping it undamaged during sleep. This action can help prevent unnecessary movement that could potentially lead to damage.
6. Opt for smooth, soft bed linen to reduce friction against the PICC line.
7. Regulate the temperature in your bedroom. Sleeping in a comfortable environment can reduce the amount you move throughout the night and keep your PICC line steady. Unregulated temperatures can cause an uncomfortable night's sleep which causes you to shift more frequently.
If you are concerned about sleeping with your PICC line, do not hesitate to communicate your concerns with your oncology nurse/doctor. They may be able to offer personalised advice and guidance to ensure comfort and safety. If you would like to speak to one of the nurses, please all our support line.
