Last reply: 11 February 2022 15:11

Partner having chemo for metastisized tumours affecting kidney, nladder liber and abominable lymph nodes. Half way through chemo ( fingers crossed we get more time) very painful cramp in lower leg muscle, doctor said it is side effect of chemo, and my partner could not heat what else to do about it, he is distressed and due to covid has to go alone. Is there anything we can do ?

Thank you for contacting the Irish Cancer Society.

I am sorry to read that your partner has been diagnosed with cancer and that it has spread.

Muscle cramps can affect some people while undergoing chemotherapy. Possible causes of the muscle cramps can include chemotherapy, other medication, a change in activity levels, dehydration or changes in electrolyte levels.  It is important that your partner continues to let his team know that the cramps are continuing and the impact that this is having on him. They may advise something such as diet changes, medications, exercise or stretches which may help.

If you would like to speak with a cancer nurse in more detail about this please call the Support Line on 1800 200 700 Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse
